Sewage water travels from the septic tank into the drain field through the septic pump. Septic pumps are typically required for septic tanks that sit lower than the drain field because gravity is unable to deliver effluent out of the tank.

How a septic pump works

A septic pump is located in the last chamber of the septic tank or a separate chamber outside of the tank. As wastewater fills the chamber, the septic pump’s float switch is automatically triggered and the impeller pushes waste up and into the drain field.

Without a septic pump, wastewater continues to rise and is not able to move to the drain field. When a septic pump malfunctions, sewage backup occurs.

This issue can be avoided with a septic system alarm.

Maintaining A Septic Pump

One of the most common reasons a sewage backup occurs is because of a malfunctioning septic pump. To avoid this, never drain or flush items that can cause blockage, including:

  • Wipes, such as sanitary wipes and baby wipes
  • Disposable diapers
  • Paper towels
  • Personal hygiene items such as tampons, pads, liners, Q-Tips, and cotton swabs
  • Dental floss
  • Cigarette butts
  • Plastics and non-biodegradable items

If you’re expecting guests, remind them that septic systems require certain care and caution compared to central wastewater systems. It’s a good idea to schedule maintenance and a septic tank cleaning and pumping if you haven’t done so in a while. Be sure to follow our recommended yearly septic system inspection to ensure that all parts are running properly.

Common septic pump issues

A septic pump that has been clogged with debris is the most common reason it fails to deliver wastewater to the drain field. However, sometimes the issue can be electrical or mechanical, such as a blown fuse, frozen bearings, internal motor malfunction, or a defective float switch, among many other reasons.

A serious sign that there may be something wrong with your septic pump is when wastewater is flowing back into your home. New septic systems are typically equipped with an alarm system, which will alert you if wastewater is not being drained properly and help avoid blockages. If you don’t have a septic system alarm installed, give us a call and we can install one for your existing septic system.

“I highly recommend calling them if you want a septic system professionally inspected as you will get more than what you pay for. (6 star treatment).”

I was drawn to Septech Solutions because of their 5 star rating and let me tell me they not only lived up to it but I would give them 6 stars if I could. I/ called Septech for a septic tank inspection on a rural property I was hoping to purchase.

Shane did the inspection and he was fantastic. What really stood out to me was his extensive knowledge and his passion to educate about how a proper septic system should work. This was really important to me because I’ve been living in a city my whole life so rural living is a huge change for me and my young family.

Furthermore, we encountered complications with the initial inspection as the discharge line was frozen (thank you polar vortex!) but Shane put me at ease because he offered to do a re-check free of charge. He didn’t stop there as he offered to be contacted by the seller so he could give free advice on how to deal with the frozen line. Even beyond that Shane was super responsive to my emails and even called me on his day off to let me know that he was going to do everything he could to protect me and family from making a bad decision.

Ultimately at the time of the re-check the line wasn’t thawed but Shane still came out to the property to meet with myself, the seller and the realtors so we could all discuss the situation and next steps. Although limited by circumstance, Shane’s expertise was still able to inspire enough confidence in me to proceed knowing what I’m getting myself into and more importantly that he would be there to help make that septic system last as long (or longer)as my family lives in the home. It was really great to have him in my corner.

That said, Shane and Septech have definitely earned the right to be my first call when we take possession so they can implement the recommendations to improve the system. I highly recommend calling them if you want a septic system professionally inspected as you will get more than what you pay for. (6 star treatment.)

On that note, I want to take one last moment to thank Shane for all his time and effort. Shane, I can tell that you are proud of what you do and that pride shows in your commitment to me as your client and your commitment to educate all who will listen about how a septic system should operate. You’ve actually inspired me to do a lot of research myself! My family and I look forward to your “septic 101” teaching when we move in. We’ll be in touch.
